Though small in size Bhutan is considered one of the richest nations today in terms of culture. They see their unique cultures as a symbol of unity, and national identity. That’s why Royal Government of Bhutan adopted preservation of cultural heritage as the third pillar of Gross National Happiness. Realizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage, the youth of Laya Central School designed a program to revive their traditional highland textiles and souvenirs that are threatened to disappear. This grassroots skill training initiative will also provide an alternative source of income for the Laya youth.
Laya is at a near 4000 meters of elevation. The Conical Bamboo Hat, traditional attire Zum and the spindling of yak ropes (Naktha) and souvenir items are highlights of their unique culture. The volunteer students are equipped with all the basic materials needed for the project. This year, they are planning to train at least 30 youths to weave the traditional attire zum, Conical Bamboo hat, ropes and souvenirs. One youth is also being trained in the tailoring of the traditional attire.
